Florence was awoken by the sound of the church bells on Sunday morning, not that she had ever really been asleep. She had gone to bed in her playing top, her first ever Weldon top and in her mind, she was already in Burton Latimer.
Across the village Charlotte was finishing her second bowl of Weetabix, she was leaving nothing to chance, and after smashing sixes for fun the day before, those Weetabix tasted like victory.
Over on Eckland Lodge, newly crowned captain Elizabeth was going through the team selection. Today was going to be a tough one. Weldon have nurtured a strong contingent of awesome girls and there was enough for two teams. At some point she was going to have to ask her sister and friends to sit on the bench, but she knew that when she took the job. Heavy is the head that wears the crown…
As the team arrived in Burton Latimer they were directed to the blue pitch, Coach Dan smiled to himself, this was a good sign. Having watched the mighty blue army of Ipswich town win promotion back to the championship the day before, the cricketing god were sending a message. Prepare for Glory!
The first game was a close one against our hosts Burton, after some excellent bowling from debutante Haniya (who took her first wicket for Weldon) alongside relentless pressure from Alice and Mary in the Field, Weldon started strong,
As Weldon took the bat, Mary and Alice then continued with some excellent running between the wickets. You wouldn’t know that this was their first game, and it certainly won’t be their last. As we approached the last over Weldon needed 8 from 5 balls. Elizabeth stood at the crease ready to do battle. Unfortunately for Weldon all bar one of the balls from the over rolled along the ground and there was no way to get the runs required. Weldon had lost by 4
Next up was the old Enemy, Kettering. Kettering had their ranks boosted by their new star signing Olivia, last season Olivia played on the hallowed turn at Weldon, Elizabeth knew her team needed to be on top form to avoid a second defeat of the day.
Kettering played well and without some inspired fielding from Eleni and Jessica (who’s weeks of practice on the outfield at Weldon had clearly paid off) they would have put up a monster score.
Elizabeth put Holly and Juliet at the crease and held her breath – Juliet was inspired, and no ball was safe. She hit boundary after boundary as her smile grew bigger and bigger. Not to be outdone at the other end Holly put one into the crowd. Salman rose from his chair, skipped to his left and took a glorious catch. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the Kia Oval and no car was to be won.
The team fed off the energy and as the sweet smell of the Weldon BBQ wafted over the pitch Clementine and Florence played beautifully and Weldon walked away victorious, by one run!!
Next up Were Brigstock and with Eleni, Jessica and Charlotte smashing the ball around for fun and with Haniya continuing to boss with the ball in hand, they were easily put to the sword. Chants of “who run the world? GIRLS” echoed across the ground
In the final game against Oundle, Clementine and Holly continued with their own version of Bazball and scored boundaries at will. Unfortunately for Weldon despite some great bowling Oundle’s batting line up were impressive and it proved a bridge too far. However, the day had been a resounding success and great fun was had by all.
Parents and coaches could not have bee prouder of the girls and this team of Weldon warriors are destined for great things
